Carleton University Homecoming // Logo and Promotional Materials
Software Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
About the Project
Throwback is Carleton University's homecoming celebration. For the 2019 year, I was tasked with creating a new logo that was energetic and fun and could be used on various materials for promotion. These materials included t-shirts, posters, social media graphics, large scale banners and more. Take a look at the final logo that I created that was used to promote the 2019 Throwback celebrations:
About the Design
Previous logos for Throwback followed a rectangular shape, with graphics that hinted at varsity sports. While sports are a portion of the homecoming celebration, there are still lots of other activities that occur during the celebration week that are related to faculty and education. In order to represent all of the activities at Throwback, it was requested that the design be relevant for both faculty events and sports events. Emphasis was put on not favoring one or the other in the design.
To give the logo an energetic feel I started sketching logos that followed a circular pattern. The curves on a circle create a more interesting line for the eye to follow. To make the logo feel more natural, I wanted the font to have a handwritten style, while still being bold allowing for the word "throwback" to be the focal point of attention. Using the font Reklame Script Medium to treat the title of the event, the word follows a curved line, which cuts through the varsity "CU" letters in the background.
The logo itself is made up of black and white, allowing it to stand out most when placed on Carleton University's main brand colour which is red.
